Fox Glacier

After a couple of awesome days in Abel Tasman we had a long drive down to our next destination, Franz Joseph Glacier. We only intended to stay there for one day but as our heli-hike was cancelled we decided to give it another shot. The rainy day we went to look at the foot of Franz Joseph Glacier instead which was also very good.

The following day we were really lucky as we managed to go up on the Fox glacier. Apparently, the heli-hikes actually only manage to go a third of the time they are scheduled to.

Finally up on the glacier the sun came forth and the crevasses and caves created by the strong pressure of the ice was really amazing. As you can see on the pictures the ice was very blue and the caves rather large. It is also always fun to go in a helicopter and they drove right towards a big ice cave which was really amazing. It was also special for me to walk on the glacier as my grandma’s sister’s husband died in a snowstorm on Fox glacier.

Franz Joseph and Fox Glaciers are actually amonst the three only glaciers in the world where you can walk through a rainforest to reach the bottom of the glacier. Compared to Franz Joseph Glacier, there was more caves but less cravasses and much flatter.
