The Coromandel and Rotorua 26 dec - 1 jan

We commenced our trip to the Coromandel peninsula and the southern parts of the north island on the 26th of December. We had rented a very nice little batch in Hahei with three bedrooms and ocean views. Funny enough the people that owned it seemed to have a Swedish connection as they had a bunch of osthyvlar as well as some dalahästar. Only ten minutes from the batch we swam, or actually more bathed at Hotwater beach. The special thing about Hotwater beach is that there are hot springs coming down from the hills and going through the sand out into the ocean. At low tide everyone digs themselves nice little bathtubs in the sand. It is actually quite tricky getting the right temperature in your little hole as the springs are burning hot and the ocean water rather cold. This creates a little shortage of good spots but Patricia was defending our pot with an iron fist. The day after Hotwater beach we took a walk to Cathedrals Cove, one of my absolute favourite beaches. The reason we like it so much is that you have a stunning 30min walk down to the beach. The beach itself actually consists of two white sand beaches separated by a crack in the mountain looking like an arc in a cathedral. Me and Markus went surfing in the afternoon and had a lot of fun, even though I have really become pretty bad compared to when I used to do it.

After the three days in the Coromandel we continued our trip to Rotorua. In the evening we went to Tamaki Village, a Maori village where we were shown the old traditions of the Maori people as well as enjoyed a traditionally cooked meal and the Maori dance, the Haka. We also visited Wai-o-Tapu thermal wonderland. There, we watched a geyser erupt, as its surface tension was broken by staff putting soap into it as well as a lot of different sulphur pools in all the colours of the rainbow. The smell of rotten eggs actually was not too bad this time. Mum, me and Markus then went up to Auckland so that me and Markus could buy our long longed for digital camera. The rest went down to Waitomo caves to do a black water rafting adventure.

On New Years Eve, I and mum went for a bush- and beach walk with dad’s cousin John. We first went to the cascades where we saw a little waterfall. We then went to Bethells beach and over to O’Neills beach. I really love NZ west coast beached with the black volcanic sand and the big waves. Unfortunately we could not swim as there was quite a bit of jellyfish in the water. We also saw the strangest thing I have ever seen in my life. It looked like something out of the alien movies. It was apparently a log covered in some sort of shell fish that had blown up onto the beach, but it really looked like some sea animal from deep down. In the evening we had a BBQ at Sue and Gavs house (Mollys friends lent us their house in Devonport). We also went up Victoria hill at midnight and watched the fireworks from the skytower.
