Kawau Island 20 dec - 26 dec

Nicks parents had kindly offered us their batch on Kawau Island, an island about 1h drive plus 20 min boatride from Auckland, over Christmas. We all truely enjoyed the time at the island and spent our days hiking, fishing etc but above all eating and sleeping.

On the fist day we walked to a secluded beach without any houses or people on it. One of the best things about Kawau is in fact that it is still so unexploited despite its beauty and popularity.

Nick also took us fishing one day. Urban got the absolute largest thing on the hook and he was pulling it in for about half an hour. Well at the surface we saw that it was a sting ray, so Nick cut of the fishing line. We really did not want to end up like the crocodile hunter. Markus also got some kowhai fish which we pan-fried. It was really delicious!

Another highlight was when Nicks uncle with wife, Stan and Jo, took us on a proper bushwalk and told us how the introduction of several species such as the opossum and the wallaby has affected the NZ bush.
They also had a lot of knowledge of all the plants and birds on the island. At the end of the walk we found some Nikau leaves which Markus’ family took home to Sweden to use as fruit bowls.
The dog you can see on the picture is foxy, Nicks parents mini terrier who became a favourite amongst all of us, despite her looks. Stan also showed us all of his “precious ones”, hence all the beautiful shells and old Maori artefacts he has found floating ashore.

Finally, we made a day excursion to the wineyard Heron's flight and had some really nice wines.
